My Grandfather, Alonzo Nathan Schulze, Known as Nate, (1895 - 1963) served in the US Army during the First World War. Early records indicate that he was a Private in a Machine Gun Company of the Nebraska National Guard. Soon after, he became a Private First Class, Company B, 109th Field Signal Battalion, 34th Infantry Division. Before shipping out to France he, along with the rest of his division, trained at Camp Cody, New Mexico.

This photo is one of six frames of a very large, panoramic photo by photographer, Almeron Newman. It is of the 109th Field Signal Battalion standing in formation at Camp Cody, NM. A copy of the full size photo hung in the hall of my grandparent's home in Omaha, Nebraska until the passing of my Grandmother in 1972. In this photo, my Grandfather is standing at attention next to his ride, a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle with side car. He's in the front row, at far right right in this photo.

For other examples of photogrophy by Almeron Newman, see the Library of Congress Website at: https://www.loc.gov/resource/pan.6a34117/

This photo is a close up from the photo described above of the 109th Field Signal Battalion standing in formation in France. I believe the man standing third from the front row, (face partially obsecured,) is my Grandfather. The man standing in front is the Commanding Officer, Major, Henry A. Jess of Fremont, Nebraska.
